Create a Farm Map

Goal

The goal of this mapping assignment is to integrate available technology (Google Maps) with farm premises with the CDFA SFS (Secure Food Supply) Program, thus providing one section of the necessary elements to the CDFA Biosecurity Plan.

Once you complete this assignment, you should be able to:

●      Use the mapping tools available on CDFA’s Secure Food Supply website.

●      Create labeled, digital maps of a farm facility that can be used in a farm biosecurity plan.

 

Assignment Description

You will be completing 3 maps for this assignment.

1.    Premises Map – Birds Eye View

2.    Premises Structures

3.    Enhanced Biosecurity Measures

You will need access to Google Maps, and sound on your computer to listen to the Farm Premises Tutorial (below), which describes steps to take to successfully complete this assignment.  Closed captions are available on the tutorial. 

Additional resources can be found on the WIFSS BioPlan Website

Steps:

1.    Open the tutorial on your computer, and then download the SFS Mapping Template Tool located in the “Materials” tab above

2.    Download SFS Mapping Template Tool word document[1]. Follow along the tutorial, pressing pause to make edits to the template for your assignment.

  1. Use Google Maps to capture an aerial view of the UC Davis dairy farm. Use this screenshot as your map image that you will label according to the Mapping Template Tool.

 

Note: On your tour of the UC Davis dairy farm, you will be able to further identify many of the structures and locations that need to be labeled on the map.

 

  1. The labeled maps will be added to the presentation that you will be making at the end of the conference with your assigned biosecurity planning team.
  2. Use the maps in your presentation to describe risks, hazards, and mitigation strategies that you will recommend as part of the farm’s enhanced biosecurity plan.
