Terminology: Biosecurity basics module

• Biosecurity – management practices designed to protect livestock and poultry, and people, from disease exposure.
• Enhanced Biosecurity Plan – building on daily biosecurity practices, the enhanced biosecurity plan focuses on protecting California Agriculture by maintaining business continuity for support industries (producers, shippers, food processors, etc), provide a continuous supply of wholesome food to consumers, and by avoiding interruptions in animal/animal product movement. This plan is written with producer, veterinarian, and support industry input, and reviewed and approved by CDFA-AHFSS.  The enhanced biosecurity plan is activated when a region is threatened by an outbreak of foreign animal disease, and can include SOPs, maps, training for employees, and more.
• Control Area – established area determined to minimize disease spread. It can include restriction of animals, and animal-animal interaction.
• Disease Outbreak – a sudden rise in the number of cases of a disease. An outbreak may occur in a community or geographical area, or may affect several countries.
• Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) – an animal disease or pest not currently found in the United States and has the potential to seriously affect livestock, wildlife, public health, trade, or the economy if introduced.
• Necropsy – examination of an animal after death, typically to determine the cause of death or extent of disease.
• Pathogen – an organism causing disease to its host.
